But while Strava excels at tracking your activities and connecting you with other runners, it was never designed to be a coach.     • Segment tracking and personal records. Strava's segment system turns every local hill or stretch of road into a competitive course. Watching your PRs fall on familiar segments is deeply satisfying, and the segment leaderboards add a layer of friendly competition.
    • Activity history and training log. Every run you have ever recorded lives in Strava. The ability to look back months or years and see your training history is valuable for both motivation and reflection.
    • Route planning and discovery. Finding new routes in unfamiliar areas or optimizing your regular running loops is something Strava handles well, especially with its heatmap data showing popular routes.

    The Strava ecosystem is massive and deeply integrated into the running world. Most GPS watches sync to it automatically, which means your data is already there.     • No RPE logging or subjective feedback. How you felt during a run matters as much as what the numbers say. Strava has no structured system for logging perceived exertion or other subjective markers of fatigue and readiness.
    • No race-specific plan generation. Training for a 5K and training for a marathon require completely different approaches. Strava does not build periodized plans tailored to specific race goals and timelines.

    None of these are criticisms of Strava. It is excellent at what it does. But tracking and coaching are different disciplines, and trying to use a tracking tool as a coach leaves significant gaps in your training.

    FAQ: Strava + AI Coaching

    Do I need Strava Premium or Summit?

    No. PeakRunner works with free Strava accounts. All the data PeakRunner needs -- pace, heart rate, distance, and duration -- is available in Strava's free tier. You do not need to pay for Strava Summit to use PeakRunner's full coaching capabilities. The premium Strava features like Fitness & Freshness, beacon tracking, and route building are nice to have, but PeakRunner does not depend on them.

    What if I use Garmin Connect or Apple Health instead?

    PeakRunner currently syncs through Strava. Since most GPS watches already sync to Strava automatically (Garmin, Coros, Suunto, Polar, and Apple Watch via third-party apps), this covers the vast majority of runners. If you use a Garmin watch, for example, your runs go from Garmin to Strava to PeakRunner without any additional setup. Direct Garmin Connect and Apple Health integrations are on the roadmap for runners who prefer not to use Strava at all.

    Does PeakRunner post to my Strava feed?

    No. PeakRunner only reads your activity data. It does not post workouts, add comments, modify your activities, or interact with your Strava feed in any way. Your Strava profile and social presence remain entirely under your control.

    What about indoor or treadmill runs without GPS?

    You can log treadmill runs and other indoor sessions manually in PeakRunner with your RPE (rate of perceived exertion) and duration. The AI estimates TSS from your perceived effort and the session length, so your training load calculations stay accurate even when GPS data is not available. If your treadmill syncs to Strava with distance and duration, PeakRunner will pick that up automatically as well.
